Stadium Boulevard name change postponed for 60 days

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Jonesboro City Council was set to discuss the potential name change of Stadium Boulevard in Jonesboro to Red Wolves Boulevard at Tuesday night's meeting.

That didn't happen though, per request of Arkansas State University. The item was tabled at the Public Works Committee for 60 days.

It'll be a two month wait before the city council might discuss the name change of Stadium Boulevard, after ASU Chancellor, Dr. Tim Hudson requested from Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin that the city hold off on voting the name change.

"I think it's just a good neighbor of the University saying to the city to say 'hey, hold off just a minute, we're not trying to force or have you all make a quick decision,'" Mayor Perrin told Region 8 News.

The letter states that the University would like to postpone consideration by the council because of how much chatter the possible name change has generated in the community.

Something Perrin said he understands.

"We've always wanted to make sure that the city and ASU are good neighbors and that we work with each other on projects," he said.

The city received an okay from both the Highway Department and the Post Office on the name change.

The city also reached out to the 53 businesses with store frontage along Stadium Boulevard from Hwy 63 to Johnson Avenue. Two businesses, Tucker's Appliance and Modern Nail and Spa were against the change.

The city was unable to get in contact with national retailer, RedBox for their input.

Now, Perrin explained, it's time to get reaction from the community.

"The question is, how do they feel? I think the University wants to know, okay, we're a University for all folks, let's just take some time, another 60 days, listen and take another look at it."

The issue is currently tabled with the Public Works committee. Two months from now, if ASU requests the city move forward with requesting the name change, the issue can be forwarded onto the full council from there.

Region 8 News will keep tracking this story and let you know what happens.
