HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) - Kids are getting ready to start another school year, and that means new supplies and clothes.
But some in Region 8 do not have the resources to buy these items.
This is where Calvary Baptist Church in Harrisburg comes in. The church is hosting a free clothing drive Saturday Aug. 10 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The giveaway is open to the public.
"People are usually lined up waiting when we get ready to open up," Women's Missionary Union president Carolyn Scott said.
Scott was part of the group that came up with this idea six years ago, and since then, Scott said it has grown immensely.
She said their first year, about 570 people received clothing, and last year, almost 800 people benefited. Scott said she expects to have even more this year.
"It seems like there's more of a need even now than there was back then."
The church has clothing for infants to adults for every season. Each person in need gets a shopping bag and extra bags for each person in their family.
Scott said there is no limit on how much each person can get, but she said there are other rules.
"The clothes we give away are not to be sold, you know, that's what we stress, that they don't take it to a flea market or yard sale. That this is stuff for them to use personally for their families."
Scott said they still need back-to-school children's clothes.
"We appreciate clean, usable clothes that if you wouldn't wear it, then we don't want it."
If there is anything left after the giveaway, Scott said the church sends the items to local nursing homes, the health department, homeless shelters and some items even make it overseas.
"So nothing is really wasted. I mean somebody uses everything we take in here. If we don't use it here, then it's used around the world."
Scott said they are still accepting donations. Calvary Baptist Church is located at 503 S. Illinois St. in Harrisburg.
