JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Arkansas State volleyball team began its preparation for the 2013 season Wednesday as head coach David Rehr welcomed 10 newcomers to campus to go along with seven returnees from last season's squad.
The team went through meetings with coaches and met members of the athletic staff as they begin preparation for the 2013 season.
The 2013 Red Wolves will look to improve upon last season's 19-14 record, which included A-State's first win in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament since 2000. Among the seven returnees is senior Megan Baska. She earned Second-Team All-Sun Belt honors after leading the Red Wolves in digs with 507 last season. Other key returnees include senior Kelsey Sullivan and junior Marie Hadar, who were third and fourth on the team in kills a year ago. A solid group of 10 newcomers, including eight true freshmen, will also push for playing time.
"I've got a year under my belt now and this is a nice restart on my terms compared to last year," Rehr said. "I'm really excited about the 10 newcomers we have and the core group of returners we have."
Coach Rehr and his coaching staff will hold the first organized practice Thursday morning at 9:30 in the HPESS followed by a 3 p.m. practice in the Convocation Center.
The Red Wolves will open the 2013 season Aug. 30 at noon against Pittsburgh and follow with a match at 4 p.m. against Idaho State as part of the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo. A-State will take on South Dakota at 9 a.m. and host Missouri at 4:30 p.m. the following day, Aug. 31, to close out the tournament.
