Missouri high school football practices kick off Monday

Missouri High School football practice kicked off on Monday.

Cape Central is one of those teams putting on the helmets for the first time for fall practice.

Tigers head coach Nathan Norman likes his squad for 2013.

But he knows there's a lot of work to get done before the regular season, as the opener is two weeks from Friday.

He also knows his guys have the experience to get the job done.

"I got a senior quarterback and that always helps," said Norman. "I got a senior oriented offense and defensive line and that's huge. And they're going to have to be leaders for me."

"This year we have four returning starters on the offensive line which brings back a lot of experience," said Scott Thomas, Sr. offensive lineman. "This is our second year in a new system, so we have a lot more confidence. A second year starting quarterback, just a lot more experience coming back."

Cape Central opens the regular season Friday, August 30 at John Burroughs.

Jackson is also practicing for the first time this fall under second year head coach Brent Eckley.

Due to the weather conditions, the Indians forced to practice in the gymnasium.

Eckley led Jackson to a big turnaround last season. So, what's ahead for the team in 2013?

"I would like to think that we could take another step, you never know there are so many things that go into that," said Eckley. "You are talking about trying to stay healthy, trying to develop leadership, team chemistry, things like that. There are a lot of things that have to go right for us to be better. I think the base is there for us to have an opportunity to be a good team."

Jackson will kick off the regular season Friday, August 30 at home against North County.

The Chaffee Red Devils look to improve off a three-win season, returning all but two players.

"Coming in optimistically, I think our kids are optimistic, and we're like any small school, you have to stay healthy that's gonna be a big concern cause we're not real deep, but most small schools aren't," said head coach Charlie Vickery.

By the way, Missouri Jamboree action kicks a week earlier on Friday, August 23. That is also the season premiere of Heartland Football Friday on Heartland News at 10.
