PEACH ORCHARD, AR (KAIT) -

A grant has given the tight-knit town of Peach Orchard a safeguard against severe weather.

FEMA and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission helped Peach Orchard fund its very first community storm shelter.

Mayor Dianne Neill says just over one year ago, the town was awarded a General Assistance and Innovative Project Grant for a Tornado Safe Shelter and Emergency Storm Siren.

Plans were in the works for a siren for some time.

"There were some ladies were part of the auxiliary to the fire department that actually started the whole thing. I found out about it after I became mayor."

Mayor Neill noticed that not many people had a storm cellar and found a grant that better suited the town's needs.

Yet, the town is still in need.

"Still have to connect power, we have to get the siren placed. We're also going to build a sidewalk that'll be covered from the community center to right here."
