Police arrest suspect in Newport apartment theft

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Newport police arrest a man in connection to a June apartment burglary.

Carlos Demond Calamese, 31, of Newport was arrested Sunday for residential burglary and theft of property.

Police responded to a call at Harmony Home Apartments, June 31.According to Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford, a maintenance supervisor told officers that apartment J3 had been burglarized. The apartment owner later reported a couch, table, lamps, a television and other furniture stolen.

The report states that some of the stolen items were found in Calamese's girlfriend's apartment which was close by. Weatherford said neighbors also provided the "information necessary to make an arrest in the burglary."

Calamese was on parole when arrested and has at least eight prior felonies.

He is facing felony charges and will be charged as a habitual offender.
