A-State Women's Soccer falls to Memphis in exhibition match

The Arkansas State women's soccer team battled host Memphis for three, 30-minute periods Wednesday night, but the Tigers ultimately took the decision 5-0 in the two squads exhibition opener.

The Tigers struck first with a goal in the match's first minute on a shot from Christabel Oduro to take a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish. Memphis added two more goals in the opening period to put A-State in a 3-0 deficit.

Memphis scored in the opening minutes of the second period before scoring the match's final goal in the 50th minute on a goal from Carly Cassady. The Red Wolves held the Tigers scoreless for the match's final 40 minutes and totaled five saves on the night.

Freshman Michaela Supple saw her first as a Red Wolves soccer player, playing 60 minutes in goal and making four saves. Amanda Lee also saw in goal and had one save.

ASU had two shots on the night, one in each of the match's first two periods. Jena Kelley and Christine Giles took each of the shots on the night. The Red Wolves used 20 players on the night, including five who saw their first action in a Red Wolves uniform.

A-State will continue the exhibition with a match at Saint Louis Friday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. The squad will open the regular season Friday, Aug. 23 at the ASU Soccer Complex against Southern Mississippi.
