Sebastian Cappelen falls in U.S. Amateur round of 32

Posted:

BROOKLINE, Mass. (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) - University of Arkansas senior Sebastian Cappelen's run at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship came to an end on Thursday in the second round of match play at The Country Club where he lost to No. 15 seed Charlie Hughes, 4 & 3.

It's been quite a summer for Cappelen, who began his offseason following an SEC Individual Championship with a third straight trip to the Palmer Cup in June to represent Team Europe. Two weeks ago, Cappelen qualified for match play at the 111th Western Amateur Championship and advanced to the semifinals.

Capplen's week at the U.S. Amateur was first extended on Tuesday when he posted a second and final stroke play round score of three-under 67 to survive the 312-player field and move into the 64-player match play tournament. Earning the No. 18 seed thanks to his two-day 73-67(-3)/140(E), Cappelen never trailed in his first round match with No. 47 seed Steve Zychowski en route to the 4 & 2 victory.

On Thursday, Hughes - a recent graduate of the University of Washington and a two-time All-PAC 12 honoree - birdied three of the first four holes to take an early lead that he would never relinquish.

A three-time PING All-American and two-time All-SEC first team honoree, Cappelen enters his senior campaign with the Razorbacks as one of the most decorated players in program history. He is currently the all-time leader with a 72.0 stroke average over 36 tournaments in which he's posted 26 top 20s, including 14 top 10s and three victories. Over those 36 tournaments, Cappelen has been the Razorback's low-man 13 times with 56 of his 105 career rounds at even-par or lower.
