CALGARY, Alberta (AStateRedWolves.com) – Led by four players scoring in double figures, including senior guard Ed Townsel with a team-high 23 points, the Arkansas State men's basketball team claimed an 88-84 exhibition victory over the University of Alberta on Thursday night at the Saville Centre.
The game was the first of three exhibition contests being played in three consecutive days by the Red Wolves as part of their preseason foreign tour to Canada.
A-State trailed by 19 points at the end of the first 10-minute period, but outscored the Golden Bears 25-10 in the second to trim its deficit to just four points, 46-42, by halftime. The Red Wolves took their first lead at 52-51 with 6:24 left in the third period when Townsel hit a three, and A-State took the lead for good just over three minutes later.
Joining Townsel in double figures were Melvin Johnson III with 19 points, Cameron Golden with 16 and Kendrick Washington with 12. Johnson also led A-State on the boards with seven rebounds, and Townsel recorded a game-high four steals to go along with his 9-of-14 shooting performance.
The Red Wolves continue their exhibition tour Friday with a 9 p.m. (CT) game against the University of Calgary at UC's Jack Simpson Gym.
