9-year-old drowns at birthday party

(WMC-TV) - Police are confirming the drowning of a 9-year-old Saturday evening.  Family members say Chris McLawyer drowned while at a birthday party on the 1500 block of Titus Road.

Family members say a few of the children jumped in the pool when the adults were inside.  Two kids were pulled out of the pool, but Chris was found at the bottom.

Marcia Adams is Chris' aunt.

"This is my sister's pool. This is the family pool...we always come out here in the summer and play in the pool with the kids and stuff. But, something just went terribly wrong and we thought we had all the kids in place, but he wasn't," stated Adams.

One family member did jump in to pull Chris from the pool.

The boy was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital before passing away.
