JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Besides the obvious position battle that has been brewing since Ryan Aplin graduated, the Red Wolves have another intense battle going on besides the race for Quarterback.
Arkansas State is missing their "wolf" position guy from last season, Don Jones, who moved on to be drafted by the Miami Dolphins.
The two guys in the race for the job are Frankie Jackson and Charleston Girley. Both are making a good case to win the starting job and it has come all the way down to the end of camp with still no clear winner.
Jackson is making the switch from runningback. He spent significant time in the backfield during the Hugh Freeze era but saw his playing time dwindle during the Malzahn days before Bryan Harsin switched him over to defense this past spring. Jackson would be a good fit for the slot being that he is similar in size and speed of Don Jones.
Girley burst onto the seen last season and was such a shocker during Gus Malzahn's fall camp that even Malzahn himself wondered where Girley came from. He has a little height advantage on Frankie Jackson while both are similar in weight.
It will be interesting to see who wins the battle considering the loser won't likely be able to slide to another position, with most secondary slots filled for the Red Wolves defense.
