Community grieves Fulton County football player who died during game

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Creekside High School football standout who died during a scrimmage this weekend was remembered during a vigil Sunday.

De'Antre "Tre Tre" Turman, 16, broke his neck while making a tackle.

More than 200 people gathered near the football field at the Ben Hill Recreation Center where the high school defensive player got his start.

Friends told CBS Atlanta News that even at the age of 4, Turman showed a lot of promise.

Holding up the jersey he wore more than 10 years ago, former teammates told the crowd the field at Ben Hill made them all stronger.

"It all started here," said one of the teenage boys.

Turman was gearing up for college recruiters.

His family told CBS Atlanta News that he already got his first major scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky.

The cornerback made his last hit during a scrimmage Friday against Banneker High School.

Turman's parents attended the vigil proudly, but tearfully took hugs from the crowd.

"My baby is gone," cried James Turman, while hugging a friend. "He was a real good kid, respectful kid. He did what he always loved to do, play football. That's what he loved."

The loss of De'Antre Turman was felt across south Fulton County.

Many of his classmates at Creekside live in nearby Fairburn.

That's why Mayor Mario Avery and council member Ron Alderman attended the vigil.

"We want to make sure that our city government [recognizes] that Tre Tre is part of our family," said Avery.

Grief counselors met with players and coaches from both schools this weekend.

They'll do the same with the rest of the students and teachers at Creekside on Monday.
