12 cars broken into at Toledo hotel

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Twelve car owners at a Toledo hotel got a rude awakening Sunday morning. Their cars were broken into and valuables were stolen.

Toledo Police say holiday shopping seasons, back to school time, and hotel stays are popular times for cars to be broken into. That's what happened at the Best Western hotel on North Summit Street.

"If something's out in the open, it's a crime of opportunity for these car thieves," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Sgt. Heffernan says breaking into cars is an easy crime. He says prevention plays a big role in car break-ins, and owners should always lock their doors and take valuable out of the car.

"Please make sure your stuff is out of sight, or take it with you if you're at a hotel, or shopping, or you're going to school – whatever the case may be," he said.

According to the police report, some of the items stolen were cash, GPS systems, high-end sunglasses and shoes, and a laptop. Heffernan says two valet workers at the hotel were let go the day before.

"I don't know if that had something to do with the fact that they didn't have the usual people watching the cars that they usually have," he said.

Anyone with information on these break-ins is asked to call Crimestopper at 419-255-1111.
