NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Two juveniles were arrested for burglarizing a home in Newport.
Newport police arrived at a home on North State Street on August 15 after three neighbors reported a burglary in progress.
According to Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford, the first officer on the scene spotted a 17-year-old boy climbing out of the house through a broken back window. He was handcuffed and stolen property from the home was found in his possession.
Witnesses told police a second suspect ran away before officers arrived. A Jackson County deputy spotted a person fitting the suspect's description, running across Daughtery Street. The suspect, also a 17-year-old boy, was not immediately located.
Monday, Newport police received a tip that led them to the second suspect's location. He was arrested at a home in Newport.
Patrick said that the homeowner saw the two boys walking the street before leaving her home.
"They apparently saw her leave and chose to break into her home while she was away," Patrick said.
Both boys are being held at the White Rover Juvenile Detention Center and are expected to be charged with residential burglary and theft of property in the Jackson County Circuit Court-Juvenile Division.
