Staff at area hospitals rush to treat, keep calm school bus crash victims

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Children were screaming as a school bus overturned Wednesday afternoon on Kansas Highway 7, and first responders immediately began to ready almost two dozen children and the bus driver for ambulance rides to area hospitals.

The staff at area hospitals sprang into action and began to rely word as to how many children they could treat. Hospital staff members said it was imperative that they respond efficiently while working to keep the patients calm.

  • The University of Kansas Hospital treated nine children. None of the injuries were serious. Three patients will be kept overnight for treatment.
  • Overland Park Regional Medical Center treated the bus driver and four children. All of the patients are stable.
  • Providence Medical Center treated five patients.
  • Children's Mercy Hospital treated four patients for bumps and bruises. None of the injured were admitted.

The bus was taking more than 30 Pembroke Hill School sixth-grade girls to a field trip in Kansas when the driver lost control in a curve on K7 near K32, authorities said. The crash occurred just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Distraught parents rushed to the hospitals to see their injured children or Bonner Springs High School where uninjured students were taken. In addition to the students on board the crashed bus, a second bus filled with sixth-grade boys were traveling to the field trip. School officials canceled the field trip and the boys were also taken to the Kansas high school for their parents to pick them up.

Up to 36 girls were on the bus. In addition to the bus driver, a second adult was on board.

Hospital workers used unique ways to calm some of the hysterical girls. Some hospital staffers had Justin Bieber stickers to hand out, which were well received by most. However, a few girls weren't so enthused by a sticker of the pop singer.
