MASSILLON, OH (WOIO) -

Long before Cherie Beans lost her son in a police involved shooting, she knew she was losing him to mental illness. And she doesn't want that to happen to other families.

"He had a lot of things in his head. He couldn't handle life by himself. He couldn't do it," said Beans.

28-year-old Shane Ryan went into the Massillon Great Clips on July 29 looking for an ex-girlfriend.  He was armed with a knife.

"I don't think he went with intentions of hurting anybody. I think he went with intentions of scaring somebody," said Beans.

When the ex wasn't there he took another girl hostage. She wasn't hurt, but Massillon Police did use deadly force.

"We just want to know the whole story. We're not getting the whole story," the suspect's mother said.

Ryan's family says he had two recent run-ins with law enforcement and police knew he was suicidal.

"The whole system failed him for years. He tried for years to get help and got nothing," said Michael Beans, the suspect's step-father.

Jackie Pollard with Stark County's Mental Health and Recovery Services Board says legal and financial limitations can lead to cycling in and out of the system.

"Until people get stabilized, right mess, right counseling, services...sometimes that happens to folks," Pollard said.

But they're working on a county wide electronic health records system.

"So that we can better intervene and get somebody connected with help before it escalates to such a dangerous situation," Pollard said.

The Stark County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation into the shooting and will present the case to a grand jury.  According to the Massillon Police Chief the incident is still under investigation.
