Audio: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst calls police to get relative out of jail

Posted: Updated:

The Allen, TX Police Department has released an audio recording of Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, as he speaks with a sergeant about getting a relative arrested on theft charges.

The arrest happened on the evening of August 3, 2013, when Ellen Bevers, who Dewhurst identifies as his step-sister's daughter-in-law, allegedly left a Kroger without paying for $57 worth of groceries.

She was charged with a Class B misdemeanor theft charge, and taken to the Allen Police Department.

Sometime later, Dewhurst called the department, and had a lengthy conversation with a sergeant. Dewhurst spent part of the call asking how to go about getting Bevers out of jail, and the rest explaining her innocence to the officer.

"Sergeant, you don't know me, but I am every year, the number one pick of all of the law enforcement agencies within Texas. The number one pick," Dewhurst said. "You don't know it, but I'm a supporter of you, and a supporter of everybody in law enforcement. And I want you to do whatever is the proper thing, but this lady, I know in my heart, was not involved in intentionally walking out and stealing 57 dollars."

The Allen PD sergeant told Dewhurst that the police do not decide guilt or innocence, and that Bevers would be transferred to the Collin County Sheriff's Office. He offered a phone number to that agency's booking department, and offered to get Bevers there faster, so that she could bond out sooner.

Dewhurst thanked the sergeant, and told him more than once that Steve McCraw, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety would be following up with another phone call.

The Allen Police Department tells KLTV 7 that Bevers did spend part of that night in jail, because she did not bond out until Sunday morning, August 4th. They also said that it would take at least 30 to 60 days for Bevers' case to be processed, and for her to be given a court date.
