Dozens leave Huntsville for 50th anniversary of DC march

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Dozens of folks from around Alabama met in Huntsville Friday to make the trip to Washington D.C. for the 50th anniversary of the March On Washington. The NAACP organized the event.

A packed Greyhound bus left around 2 p.m. and will travel overnight.

"I'm absolutely elated," said traveler Dr. Elaine Harrington. "I didn't sleep all last night."

Dr. Harrington doesn't plan to get a wink Friday night either. Because while others are anticipating recreating a moment in history, Harrington is making this trip for the second time.

"50 years ago in 1963, and I'm alive today to experience it again," said Dr. Harrington.

Others like Rodney Gordon weren't even born when Dr. Harrington and thousands of others made the March on Washington. Still he said the message today is the same

"People now are sharing the same grieves; they're sharing the same despair," said Gordon. "So now I think they are so excited to come together and be able to express themselves."

The march is Saturday at 9 a.m. It's 1.6 miles long and will be led by veterans of the march in 1963.

"We are of a generation whose shoulders someone else stood on and now we are standing on theirs," said organizer Ollie Parhan. "And hopefully we can lead by example and somebody else stand on ours."
