King Center commemorates civil rights icon's legacy

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A bell rang in honor of the moment Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his most famous speech at commemorations around the country and in Atlanta.

People from all over came to the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was pastor, to pay homage to the man and his legacy.

LaVoughn Thomas, her husband Donn and their nine-year-old twin grand-nephews, Milan and Mykal, could not go to the commemoration in the nation's capitol, so they came to the King Center.

"This is a historic day in the history of our nation," LaVoughn Thomas said. "Here is the place they get to study, and see and hear, even experience the lives of people and how it affected this nation."

"My great nephews need to know this history and celebrate the fact we are here today," Donn Thomas said.

"I wanted to know the real thing, not just read it in a book," Milan Thomas said.

"I want to see all things that Martin Luther King did to help people be nice to each other," Mykal Thomas said.

King's historic address helped change the nation and the world.

For Steve Erickson, who grew up in metro Atlanta during the era of legal segregation, it changed his life.

"I'm more accepting than I was. Dr. King helped me love people of different colors," Erickson said.
