Governor Beebe sets election for ex-senator's seat

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe has set the dates for a special election to replace a former state senator who resigned after a state ethics panel said he spent thousands in campaign dollars on personal items.

Beebe on Wednesday set Jan. 14 as the date of the special election to fill the vacancy left by Democratic Sen. Paul Bookout's resignation.

Bookout resigned last week after he was fined $8,000 and reprimanded by the Ethics Commission. The commission ruled that Bookout spent thousands from his campaign on clothing, home theater equipment and other personal items.

Beebe set Oct. 8 as the date of the Democratic and Republican primaries for the seat. If needed, a primary runoff will be held Nov. 12. Candidates must file between noon Sept. 3 and noon Sept. 6.
