NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A special baby shower Thursday brought together a group of very special families. Monroe Harding hosted a shower for foster moms who often don't have time to plan and stock up like traditional families.

Right now, there are 523 babies in the state under the age of 1 who need a foster home, and Monroe Harding works with the Department of Children's Services to find good parents like Christina Douglas, who fostered two infants with just one day's notice.

"And so it kind of changed our life. And I had boys who were school age, so we kind of learned how to be parents to newborns all over again," Douglas said. "The youngest one we have right now, we picked him up from the hospital, so he had nothing at all."

Parents picked up everything from car seats to diapers to toys at the baby shower, and they said every little bit helps.

"Oh my gosh, the prices have gone up so much. But they have to have it. You know, that is the sacrifice you give. You take away something from yourself, which is what I do, and give to them," said foster mom Soncerray Jones.

Foster parents do get some compensation from the state, but that financial assistance has to go a long way.

"They have the responsibility to get them to the doctor, making sure they have daycare. And all the fun things they do, they supply that for them," said Rhonda Allen, with Monroe Harding.

But now, they have stocked nurseries to keep their babies safe and happy.

Monroe Harding says it could still use some more donations and foster parents. If you would like to help, visit http://www.monroeharding.org.
