JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - For the second time in three months, a flag at the Holy Angels Convent has disappeared from the flagpole that sits at the convent entrance.
"I had left the convent in the morning on Monday. I took another Sister and went to the doctor. When we came back I noticed it was gone and I said something to Sister. I said, 'I wonder why the flag is not up,'" said Sister Mary Therese Johnson.
Sister Mary says the "Coat of Arms" cost about $800 and is significant to the convent's history. "It represents us. It represents the congregation in Italy that we belong to," she said. "The olive branches (on the flag) are the interior and the exterior sufferings of Christ and the crimson cross represents Calvary where Christ was crucified."
The flag usually flies next to the U.S. flag, and the state flag, which also disappeared a few months ago.
"The state flag was taken in May. So, this is the second flag we've lost."
There are no flags on the poles right now. The Sisters purchased another state flag, but they will not be putting it, or the U.S. flag back on the flagpole. They decided to fly the remaining two flags only on special occasions.
The Sisters say they are not interested in pressing charges, they just want the flag returned.
"I hope they're using them well. I wish they would return the Olivetan flag because it's very important to us. It's very special to us."
The estimated cost of the two stolen flags is $1,000. Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to call the Jonesboro Police Department at (870) 935-5553.
