MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A teenager is in critical condition after being shot on a playground near Evans Elementary School Sunday afternoon. The school is located in the 4900 block of Cottonwood Road near South Perkins and American Way.

According to neighbors, the 14-year-old victim was playing with two others when the gun accidentally went off. The victim was hit in the side. Children from the neighborhood tended to the teenager until paramedics arrived.

Deanna Conrad, 15, recalled how she heard about the incident.

"My friend came in and was like 'he got shot, he got shot,' " said Conrad.

Conrad was inside when her friend, known as KT, was shot on the school playground.

"He had a shirt around him. You could tell he was shot on his side. He was in so much pain and that's when all the police came," continued Conrad.

The 15-year-old was taken to The MED, and Conrad explained how something like that could happen.

"They play like that. It's not normal, but it's how it is around here," Conrad said.

As a teenager herself, she does not think teens should have guns until they are older.

"To me, it's stupid. There is no point in having a gun if you're 15 to 16-years-old. You should get it when you are grown," stated Conrad.

Parent Donna Peterson knows her daughter, Shania, and friends come to this playground every day. Sunday's shooting now has her talking with her kids about gun safety.

"If you [are] over at a kid's house and they [are] playing with a gun, you come home," said Peterson.

Sam Bailey lives across the park, and he recalled seeing police on the scene.

"I [saw] there was somebody on the ground for awhile," explained Bailey.

Bailey made clear he believes parents need to keep a closer eye on their kids and guns need to be out of reach.

"Keep your guns up if you got any," continued Bailey.

Police have confirmed no one has been charged at this time. So far, it is unclear where the teens got the gun and what caused it to go off.
