Sheriff: disagreement about hunting property leads to shooting

ROMANCE, AR (KAIT) - White County deputies are investigating a shooting that happened on Sunday after an argument over hunting property.

In a news release, Bill Higginbotham with the White County Sheriff's Department said Adam Doty, 32, of Little Rock, was hunting on property owned by his family on Quattlebaum Road in Romance.

Doty was then confronted by Justin Yandell, 30, of Romance, who was armed with a pistol.

According to Higginbotham, Yandell threatened Doty and Doty's father. During the argument, Doty shot Yandell in the leg after Yandell threatened him with his gun.

Yandell was taken to the White County Medical Center where he was treated for his non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Yandell told KAIT in a phone interview Tuesday morning he was unarmed when he approached the hunting party. In a phone interview he said, "I put my pistol on the ground in its holster, unchambered and then walked towards the men. My gun was about 50 yards away from them."

Yandell went on to say he went into the area to investigate after bullets were heard flying onto his property with his children in the yard.

White County Detectives and Arkansas Game and Fish are investigating the case. No arrests have been made.

Game and Fish officers can charge Doty with hunting or firearms violations.

Deputies said there is no report of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the case.
