FAYETTEVILLE (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) - Arkansas center Travis Swanson is one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Wednesday.
Swanson was included on numerous preseason All-American and All-SEC teams in addition to watch lists for the Rimington Trophy, Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award. The Kingwood, Texas, native is a team captain for the second consecutive year, becoming just the 11th Razorback in school history to serve as a team captain in consecutive seasons. He has started 39 games in a row, spanning every game of his collegiate career, which is the third-longest active streak in the country. In last week's season-opening 34-14 win vs. Louisiana, he recorded 16 knockdown blocks.
Swanson is on track to graduate in December with a degree in criminal justice and has been named to the Razorback Honor Roll for his work in the classroom. Off the field, he is been actively involved in the community while in Fayetteville. Swanson has participated in the Read Across America Program, Lift Up America, Northwest Arkansas Heart Walk and Special Olympics. He also has been involved in children's activities such as visiting Boys and Girls Clubs and children's hospitals.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
Swanson and the rest of the Razorbacks host Samford on Saturday inside War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kick and will be broadcast in high definition on a pay-per-view basis.
