Mayoral race turns to mudslinging

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With less than a week to go before Toledo's primary election, much of the campaigning is taking a negative twist in the race for mayor.

TV ads aired by Joe McNamara take aim at Mike Bell and Anita Lopez. Also, some unique signs are appearing around town, including yard signs attacking Mike Collins.

UT political science professor David Davis says there's plenty of research to suggest negative ads are effective, and he's received some of those ads at his doorstep.

"Joe McNamara has put out some extremely direct ads," Davis said. "I've gotten some postcards at home against Anita Lopez, and she's done some negative campaigning herself."

Lopez is also a target of a billboard which criticizes her spending as Lucas County Auditor. Davis says due to the nature of Toledo's non-partisan primary, he's not surprised much of the attacks are between Lopez and McNamara, two elected Democrats running for mayor.

"The two of them are battling for second place," he explained. "It's extremely likely Mike Bell will get the most votes."

After the primary, Davis says voters can expect more negative ads leading up to the November election.

"It happens in many other cities, so I'm not surprised. I think it keeps the candidates on their toes."

The top two vote-getters in the mayoral race will move onto the general election.
