Voters Will Decide If Trumann Stays Wet

September 22, 2004 – Posted at 4:37 p.m. CDT

TRUMANN -- For years alcohol sales have been legal in Poinsett County. But some residents in Trumann want to change that, and a November election might make part of the city dry.

“Everyone should have the right to do that if they want to. Is this Prohibition?” asked Paul Stotts who opposes the vote.

But Trumann resident Bertie Blesingame couldn’t disagree more, “I don't think they should drink it. It just causes lots of problems.”

Voters in the city of Trumann have some big decisions to make in November. They'll decide if a part of the town will go dry.

Trumann Mayor Ronnie Harrison said, “There were a bunch of citizens, who don't like the alcohol to start with. They got a petition, which is their right to do, and it was okayed by the election commission.”

Almost 350 people signed the petition asking for alcohol sales to be stopped in Ward 2. If the 867 voters in Ward 2 vote ‘no’ on alcohol sales, the Citgo gas station won't be able to sell beer anymore. However, the Shell gas station just across the street will be able to because they're in Ward 5.

“It's a emotional issue for a lot of people. It will hurt some guys business, but then other people just get irritated at the thought of alcohol,” said Harrison.

The new Wal-Mart Super Center, which is in Ward 2, has already agreed not to sell alcohol.

Trumann resident James Bogard said, “I think they ought to just leave it wet. They're going to get liquor anywhere they want it, so why make this dry?”

“I think it makes a hardship on the families and it's just not good to, I don't think it's good to sell it,” said Blesingame.

“This is Poinsett County, if it's wet it's wet. If it ain't, it ain't. It's plain and simple,” said Stotts.

Voters in Ward 2 will ultimately decide the final outcome at the polls on November 2nd. Until then, the only two businesses in the ward that sell alcohol, the Citgo Flash Market and Mickey's Quicker Liquor, will continue to sell beer and liquor.
