Swanton banning donation bins

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

TheSwanton community is working to clean up their parking lots and retail space, and say they plan to do it by banning donation dump sites.

Leaderssay donation bins have turned into a dumping ground for trash. Instead of usingthem as intended, people are leaving things like broken lamps and computers andtrash bags at the bins.

Swantonvillage employees say it's gotten so bad, they have to clean the areathemselves once a week.

"Thelast time we had a backhoe, we had to pick [the trash] up and then take it toour street department for disposal," said Village Administrator Jon Gochenour. "Ittakes away from other things that we should be doing in the village."

Theban on the bins goes into effect at the end of the month. The village isencouraging charities to open shops where employees can monitor what's droppedoff, and make sure parking lots don't end up as dumping grounds.
