Michael Gordon named College Sports Madness SBC Player of the Week

JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State University's Michael Gordon has been selected as this week's (Sept. 16) College Sports Madness Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Offensive Player of the Week for his noteworthy performance in the Red Wolves' 41-34 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) opening win over Troy last Thursday (Sept. 12) in Jonesboro, Ark.

Gordon, who also claimed College Football Performance Award (CFPA) Honorable Mention recognition this week (Sept. 16), led all rushers in the game with a personal career-best 115 yards on eight carries for a 14.4 yards per attempt average.  The 5-9, 187-pound sophomore running back tallied a pair of touchdowns against the Trojans on third-quarter runs covering 11 and 64 yards.  His 64-yarder represented A-State offense's third longest play of this season.  Gordon also registered a 15-yard kickoff return in the conference tilt at A-State's Liberty Bank Stadium in Jonesboro.

A native of Camden, Miss., Gordon has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in two of the Red Wolves' three outings this fall.  He rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on four attempts (25.5 ypa.) in A-State's 62-11 non-league home victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its 2013 season opener (Aug. 31).

This season, Gordon presently ranks second among Arkansas State's rushing leaders with 210 yards on 16 carries in three games.  Gordon, who has three tallied three touchdowns on the year, is averaging 13.1 yards a carry and 70.0 yards on the ground.  He also has two pass receptions for 57 yards, an average of 28.5 yards per reception, and has returned two kickoffs for 25 yards (12.5 ypr.).  Gordon is tied for third in team scoring with 18 points.

For his career, Gordon has gained 255 rushing yards on 23 attempts to average 11.1 yards per carry and 21.3 yards per contest in 12 appearances.  He also has three receptions for 64 yards andis averaging 21.3 yards a catch.

Arkansas State will puts its 2-1 record up against the Memphis Tigers this Saturday (Sept. 21) in a non-conference matchup at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tenn.  Opening kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CT) in a game to be televised live on ESPN3.
