The Arkansas State men's golf team posted a final-round 292 on Monday
to climb from 11th place to tied for seventh in the final standings at
the two-day D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate played on the Illinois State
University Golf Course.
Red Wolves, competing in their second tournament of the season, ended
the opening 18 holes
tied for ninth place with a 297, but dropped to 11th place in Sunday's
second round despite cutting a stroke off its first-round total.
However, freshman Landon Hearnes and sophomore Seth Garner both carded a
final-round 71, the lowest score by an A-State
player at the tournament, to catapult the Red Wolves up four places in
the standings on Monday.

Southern Illinois, Illinois Wesleyan, Oral Roberts, Missouri State and
Butler. Loyola-Chicago claimed the tournament championship, while
Purdue was runner-up and host Illinois State finished third.

thought our team played pretty well, especially today, with a young
lineup consisting of three
true freshmen, one sophomore and a senior" said A-State head coach Steve
Johnson. "The wind shifted directions today and came out of the
northeast about 15-20 mph, which makes this golf course play extremely
difficult. I was happy for Landon getting a top-20
finish in just his second tournament. Chance (Holden) has played solid
for us each of these first two tournaments, and it was nice to see
Brayden (Brown) contribute in his first collegiate event. We were able
to finish strong, and hopefully that will give
us something to build on the rest of the season."
coming off a top-five performance at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate,
completed the tournament
tied for 33rd place to follow Hearnes in the standings. The senior
recorded a combined 222, which included scores of 73, 75 and 74.
and Brown were both competing in their first tournament of the season
and finished tied
for 48th place with a 226. In addition to Garner's final-round 71, he
shot a 75 and 80 for the first and second rounds, respectively. Brown
posted a low round of 74 to begin the tournament and shot a 76 for each
of the last two rounds.
Also competing for A-State, freshman Matthew Loiacano recorded a 229 to finish tied for 58th
place. Loiacano tied his season-best score with a second-round 72, and also shot a 78 and 79 for the other 36 holes.
