JPD: Teenager died after he fired handgun inside truck

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Jonesboro police have released more information about the accidental shooting that caused the death of a teenager Wednesday night.

According to Sgt. Doug Formon, the victim and two other teenagers were parked in a pickup truck on the north side of the Chick-fil-A parking lot when the shooting happened.

Police say the teens removed a .357 revolver from a holster in the truck's front cab.

Jonesboro Police tell Region 8 News the gun was already in the truck that belonged to the grandfather of one of the witnesses.

The 17-year-old in the backseat of the truck then fired the weapon, hitting himself in the head.

According to the incident report, the witnesses told police "the next thing they knew was that he placed the gun underneath his chin and pulled the trigger, causing the gun to discharge."

The victim was taken by ambulance to St. Bernards Hospital, where he later died.

Police tell Region 8 News they will not be releasing the name of the victim.

The two other teens in the truck were not hurt.

Police received a call at 8:12 p.m. Wednesday about a shooting inside a truck located on the restaurant parking lot, Formon said.

When officers arrived at the restaurant, there were 75-100 people in the parking lot, according to police.

"What we know right now is that there was a youth group from one of  the local churches that had actually gone to Chick-fil-a after church. There were several youth that were there," Formon said.

Formon said police are not seeking a suspect.

Formon said the police department hopes this tragedy will spark gun safety conversations in Region 8 families.

"It's very important that they know how to take control of the weapon when they find one...but if they're a child, a small child, they need to know that as soon as they find one, don't touch it, get away from it and call an adult," Formon said. "It is a deadly weapon and in the wrong hands, it can have a very tragic outcome."

The detective heading up the case tells Region 8 News the grandfather that the gun belonged to will not face charges in the shooting.
