The Williams Baptist College Eagles opened their American Midwest Conferenceseason on Tuesday afternoon against Freed-Hardeman University. The soccer Eagles came away with a thrilling, double overtime 1-0 victory in front of a large home crowd.
Yuri Leite steered home a Lucas Braga cross with little over one minute remaining in thesecond overtime to provide the only goal of the contest. It was Leite's only shot on goal in the contest. Matheus Allonso led the Eagles with three shots on target. Williams totaled 14 efforts on goal in the game.
"I was proud of the team. They battled the whole contest and when Yuri got his chance heslid it home. It could not have happened to a better kid," said Head Coach Shane Stolz.
Javier Piedra and the WBC defense held FHU scoreless for the entire contest. He amassed11 saves in 1:08:42 of action. Freed came into the contest undefeated and were ranked 10th in the NAIA inshots per game.
"Javi played very well. Our team feels confident with him in goal. For a freshman to holdtheir attack in check for almost two hours of play is great. We attacked and defended as a team. It was a total team effort," added Stolz.
The win improves the Eagles overall record to 3-1 and 1-0 in the AMC. They will kick backonto the field on Saturday, September 21 for another AMC matchup against Missouri Baptist University. That contest will begin at 2 p.m., and will be played at the WBC soccer field.
