Warrant: Father, stepmother 'too high' to save 18-month-old girl

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The father and stepmother of an 18-month-old girl were "too high and drunk" to save her after she swallowed a dishwashing tablet, according to court documents.

Kristopher Joseph Speigner, 31, was arrested Monday after a year-long investigation into the child's death. Madison police charged him with criminally negligent homicide.

According to an affidavit, Speigner didn't seek medical help when his daughter, McKenzie, swallowed a dishwashing detergent tablet She died Sept. 29.

Speigner's arrest warrant said he and his wife Joy Lynn, the child's stepmother, were "too high and drunk" to do anything to save her.

Joy Lynn Speigner was arrested Tuesday after she turned herself in to authorities after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She was also charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Kristopher and Joy Lynn Speigner are free on bond. They are scheduled to appear in court next month.
