Operation Christmas Child needs community’s help

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – The holiday season may still be a few months away, but Santa is already in need of some helpers.

Operation Christmas Child put out a call for help Saturday to the members of local churches and civic groups that gathered at the Craighead County Library.

The nonprofit needs help collecting shoe boxes packed with simple gifts as well as hygiene items and school supplies that can be sent to children in need overseas.

Melinda Dixon, the group's Northeast Arkansas area coordinator, says she hopes people can send off a record number of boxes this year.

"We packed a little over 7,000 boxes last year in our seven-county area, so we would love to have over 10,000 boxes this year," Dixon said. "That's just a really high goal. It's our God goal."

Operation Christmas Child will begin collecting boxes from November 18 to November 25.

If anyone would like to donate or find out how to get involved, contact Melinda Dixon at 870-476-3594 or send her an email at melindadixon4@yahoo.com.
