Springfield police cracking down on gang activity

Posted: Updated:

Magazine Street, King Street and Westminister Street - each are located within a mile radius of one another, and now each have a make-shift memorial marking the spots where three people were gunned down in three separate shootings in just the past week.

The most recent shooting happened this weekend.

According to police, 22-year-old John Alexander, of Springfield, was shot in the head on Saturday while sitting in his car on Westminister Street.

Police are calling all three shootings gang related.

"The public has to realize these aren't random shootings. The people were targets. We don't want anyone killed in the city," said Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

And that's why Springfield police are stepping up patrols in areas throughout the city where there is active gang activity, primarily in the Mason Square section.

"It's what we do. We're police officers. We respond to this. Our gang unit is working overtime, our arms unit is working over time. We're not going to let this get out of control," said Delaney.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said he has faith in the police department to seek justice for these murders and to prevent more from happening.

"This is a very active investigation, and I feel confident that our police department will break this in," said Sarno.

For friends and family of the victims, they said they too hope the rise in police presence will help prevent anyone else from loosing a loved one.
"It's crazy. All youth killing youth for no reason. It's stupid," said Luis Enriquez, friend of murder victim, Brandon Daniels.

Springfield police said they've received several leads through their Text-a-Tip program.

They're asking anyone with information on any of the three murders to contact police.

The extra patrols will be taking place until further notice.
