Two Izard Co. organizations affected by scam

Posted: Updated:

IZARD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – Two Horseshoe Bend organizations fall victim to scams involving federal tax numbers.

According to the Izard County Sheriff's Department, the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club reported that they received a shipment of "high dollar cell phones" from FedEx.

Someone purchased the cell phones from Verizon Wireless by creating a charge account using the federal tax numbers and addresses of both organizations.

Neither the church nor the Eagles Club knows how their federal numbers where obtained.

The sheriff's office states that an investigation indicated that the intent of the scammers was to act as representatives of the church and club and call FedEx advising them that the phones were sent to the wrong address and to ship them to a West Virginia address.
