LITTLE ROCK (AGFC) –
Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission botanist, Theo Witsell was
recently named as one of 25 Visionary Arkansans by the Arkansas Times.
The weekly publication explains that Witsell, and the others named
Visionaries, received the honor because "they have ideas of
Witsell is recognized for his work with ANHC and his identification of a new plant species endemic to Arkansas, Pelton's rose gentian
, which he named for the botanist who found it.
As part of the Arkansas Times publication and the second annual Arkansas Times
Festival of Ideas, Witsell presented "Arkansas's native grasslands:
natural history, conservation and recreation" during the Festival's
lecture series. He discussed the Arkansas grasslands of the past, ANHC's
work to protect rare plants, and the possibility of bringing back
Arkansas's population of rare plants.
