OH Amber Alert not impacted by federal government shutdown

COLUMBUS, OH (Toledo News Now) -

State officials want to make sure citizens understand that Amber Alerts in Ohio will still be distributed, despite the federal government shutdown.

The Ohio Amber system is initiated by local and state authorities and has not been impacted by the shutdown. The system is working and available 24-hours a day and includes secondary alerting systems from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"There recently has been a lot of media attention regarding the government shutdown, specifically, the Amber Alert website, amberalert.gov. This is an informational website. The Amber Alert program has not been shut down," explained Robert Hoever, NCMEC's director of special programs with the missing children division.

Hoever emphasizes that the NCMEC still provides operational support for every Amber Alert program nationwide, even though the informative federal website is not active.

"Law enforcement agencies across Ohio are still able to issue Amber Alerts, and the state of Ohio and NCMEC will still activate all systems associated with the alerts," said Ohio Amber Alert coordinator Capt. Rob Jackson.
