Police have made an arrest in a deadly hit and run involving a pedestrian in Poplar Bluff.

Joseph “Jack” Dangerfield was arrested for felony leaving the scene of an accident, felony tampering with evidence and driving with a suspended drivers license. He was booked at the Poplar Bluff Police Department and taken to the Butler County Jail pending formal charges.

During a preliminary interview police say the suspect admitted he was the driver of the maroon vehicle that struck the pedestrian. He led officers to the location where he had hidden the Maroon 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix he was driving at the time of the deadly crash.

Police Chief Danny Whiteley said it happened shortly before noon on Oct. 7.

Poplar Bluff police say the victim 26-year-old Jason Thomas Eppinette of North 6th Street in Poplar Bluff died about 2 p.m. Monday.

Whiteley said someone driving a maroon car hit the man crossing Pine Street near Maverick Glass.

"A lot of times people, they don't think they actually have any pertinent information but when you sit down and you get the information that they have and you compare it to other witnesses, they might be in the same location," Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland said. "They viewed it from a little different angle, they seen it just prior to or maybe just afterwards and when you get all those witness statements you put them all together and get the entire picture."

Sheriff Mark Dobbs said it is a maroon or red passenger four-door vehicle with front end damage. The vehicle was last seen going East from Pine at 9th.

Investigators with the Poplar Bluff Police Department processing evidence collected from the accident scene, interviewing witnesses and collecting surveillance video footage.

The suspect's vehicle information had been shared with law enforcement agencies in southeast Missouri.
