Former U.S. ambassador speaks in Springfield

Monday marked 12 years since the start of the war in Afghanistan.

A former U.S. ambassador who played a key role in that region spoke in Springfield.

Former U.S. Ambassador Marc Grossman talked in front of the World Affairs Council of Western Mass at the Springfield Marriott.

He recently retired as special assistant to the president for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The president brought him out of retirement to broker peace talks with the Taliban.

Grossman talked about the relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"We tried our very best to set the stage for a secure, stable and prosper Afghanistan inside and secure, stable and prosper region. An Afghanistan that could stand up for itself as American forces start to draw down," he said.

The World Affairs Council was founded in Springfield back in 1926.

It's part of a network of more than 90 world affairs councils across the country.
