Call 11 for Action: Toledo woman says vacant house brings crime to neighborhood

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An 86-year-old Toledo woman says she lives next door to an eye sore that is bringing crime to her community. Now she's calling for something to be done about it.

Vacant homes plague the city of Toledo, but the home on the 800 block of Oakwood has been a huge problem for Ernestine Jordan.

Jordan says the home was boarded up after it caught fire twice last month, but she says people have been tearing the boards down to get inside the partially roofless home. She says she fears for her own safety.

"I'm too old to have to live like this," she said. "I like to be outside, but now, I'm too afraid to sit on my porch."

Jordan says she's lived next to the home for more than 50 years, but it is becoming a nuisance.

"I could be in here asleep and I wouldn't know the house is burning until my house has caught fire," she said.

She believes the vacant home is a disgrace to the once-affluent community. She also says she had a rodent problem recently, and although she's called the city several times, she says nothing has been done.

"I don't think they care about us here on Oakwood, because if they did, they would do something about this," Jordan said.

Toledo News Now called the city as well, but has not heard back.
