Cave City approves first ever sales tax after close vote

CAVE CITY, AR (KAIT) – Voters in Cave City approved the first sales tax in the town's history by a narrow margin.

According to the Sharp County clerk's office, only 94 people cast their ballots in favor of the proposed one percent sales and use tax, while 83 voted against it.

The town held a special election Tuesday to determine the fate of the sale tax.

City officials expect the new sales tax to generate about $130,000 each year. They plan to split the revenue in half to fund not only a new police officer but several other improvement projects for the city as well.
