Mike Davis added to Maxwell Award watch list

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina running back Mike Davis has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, a prize given to the country's most "outstanding collegiate football player."

Davis joins a list of 11 other college football players for the award.

It's easy to believe Davis should be considered for prize. After all, he has become one of the Gamecocks most-used offensive weapons.

Davis, the Lithonia, Georgia native, appeared to have a tough gig following up to former running back Marcus Lattimore.

But Davis' stats tell the story that he's been just as good as Lattimore. He's the SEC's leading rusher with an average of 122.8 yards per game. He's also had four 100-yard rushing games.

The Gamecocks are likely to continue relying on Davis for this weekend's game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. South Carolina travels to Fayetteville on Saturday for a 12:21 p.m. kickoff.
