30 behind bars after Toledo gang sweep

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There are 30 fewer gang members on the streets of Toledo after police conducted a gang sweep recently.

The mission was to reduce gang and gun violence in the area. Toledo Police, along with Lucas, Wood and Ottawa county sheriff's offices accomplished that.

"It also sends a strong message to the community that we take the gang issue seriously," said Sgt. Kevin Braun, with TPD. "It gets bad people off the streets, so it's just a good effort. It's a good thing for us to do every once in awhile, and I think it sends the right message."

Toledo Police say they always consider a gang sweep a success, no matter how many people they arrest and charge, because there's at least one less criminal on the streets. In this particular sweep, police arrested 30 people. Eighteen felony charges were filed.

"In this particular situation, we had good totals," Braun said. "Lots of felony arrests, and a lot of bad people were taken off the streets, so yeah, it was highly successful."

Braun says they target areas based on tipsters, complains, and by looking at where officers are often going for criminal activity.

"[We ask,] ‘Where does it seem like the problems are the most prevalent?' And then you sit down and you decide where you're going to target and who you're going to go after, and then you go out and do it," he said.

He says they go after specific people, but also patrol certain neighborhoods.
