LEAVENWORTH, KS (KCTV) -

A Leavenworth mother of two was killed after apparently being electrocuted following a single-car accident.

Leavenworth police Chief Pat Kitchens says the 26-year-old woman, identified by a friend as Lachelle Kemp, was traveling north in the area of Seventh and Olive streets Wednesday morning when she lost control of the vehicle. The car left the roadway and struck a power pole.

Witnesses said the woman got out of the car and, when she did, power lines came down. They said they saw arching and heard explosions.

Kitchens says officers found her unresponsive at the scene. Kemp was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"I didn't find out that she died until maybe 30 minutes after, an hour after," said her friend, Mariah Wright.

There were two small infants in the vehicle, a 3-year-old boy and a 42-day-old infant girl. They are believed to be Kemp's children.

The two were taken to a hospital to be checked out. The car has been impounded, and an investigation has been launched to determine how and why the car left the road.

Friends of Kemp came to the crash scene, visibly shaken over the sudden loss of their friend.

"She was always there for people whenever they needed her. She was very helping, caring and kind," Aliesha Wilbourn said.

Neighbors said this is the first fatality, but it's not the first time the pole was hit by drivers. Bob Richardson has lived in the area for 20 years and said he's seen at least eight accidents. He even offered aid to the victims.

"We had a guy on a motorcycle that hit the thing, and we've had an elderly man and an elderly woman," he said.

Another neighbor expressed concern that this could happen again.

"It's just because the way the street runs. If people don't pay attention, it's an easy thing to run into," Marijke Clothier said.

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
