NORMAN, Okla. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State senior women's tennis player Biljana Miloshevska advanced to the main draw of the USTA/ITA Regional Championship in Norman, Okla. by winning two matches Thursday.
Miloshevska defeated Oklahoma's Zita Engbroks 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7) in her first match before beating Meagan Monaghan of Southern Illinois in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 to advance. She joins A-State's Tamara Slijepcevic, who had previously qualified, in the main draw that begins Friday.
"I'm very proud of Biljana for qualifying," A-State women's tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. "She played two outstanding matches today."
Arkansas State's Janie Nowland fell one victory short of qualifying for the main draw. Nowland defeated UMKC's Amelie Amsallem 7-6, 6-3 before falling to Oklahoma State's Karyn Guttormsen 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Julie Gauguery fell to Wichita State's Montse Blasco Fernandez 6-2, 6-4 in her first match, but bounced back to defeat South Dakota State's Tiffany Filipovich 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation round.
The doubles pairs of Slijepcevic/Nowland and Miloshevska/Gauguery will also be in action Friday in addition to the singles main draw.
