Changes made to Ole Miss football parking

(WMC-TV) - Parking congestion can cause a huge headache. That was proven at Ole Miss after the football game last week. Changes are being made at Ole Miss to help alleviate the wait to park on game days.

People heading to Oxford for the game against LSU Saturday are hoping game day parking is easier than it was last weekend. It was a post-game gridlock as people waited for hours to get shuttle rides back to their cars.

It took people like Jack Brady hours to get across town or returned to cars that were parked at four city lots spread throughout town.

"The guy that was driving me, he was getting pretty mad banging on his steering wheel," said Brady.

Last weekend was the first 'big game' weekend since Ole Miss and the city of Oxford implemented new parking changes that have caused congestion. The mayor hopes new adjustments will make it easier this weekend, but drivers should still expect to wait.

"This is a town of 19,000 people and we have 60,000 people trying to leave that stadium at one time, particularly at 11:30 at night, we're not ever going to be efficient," said Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson.

Bigger shuttles will take people to car lots and there will be a street designated solely for bus traffic. Many roads coming from campus will switch be changed to one ways in an effort to get people out faster.

Ole Miss and city leaders are working on a new parking garage to fix some of these problems for the future. Meanwhile, parking officials recommend budgeting at least one hour to get back to your car after the game.
