Leyland stepping down as Tigers manager

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Jim Leyland will step down from his position as manager of the Detroit Tigers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The decision comes two days after the Tigers were knocked out of the American League Championship Series by the Boston Red Sox.

In eight seasons with Detroit, Leyland coached the Tigers to a 700-597 (.541) record.  During that tenure they won two American League pennants, as well as the AL Central division title each of the past three seasons.  Leyland was named AL Manager of the Year in 2006.

Leyland signed a one-year extension with the Tigers in October of last year, allowing him to now step down without being in breach of contract.
