COLUMBUS, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A seven person panel has decided to expand Medicaid in the state of Ohio at the governor's request.

Governor John Kasich originally asked the legislature to approve the expansion. After meeting resistance in the statehouse, Kasich turned to the Ohio Controlling Board, which handles adjustments to the state budget.

The board approved the expansion in a 5-2 vote Monday.

With the expansion, more than 300,000 low income adults who do not currently qualify for Medicaid will become eligible for the program.

The federal government has promised to cover all of the cost of the expansion for the first three years, before eventually phasing that support back to 90 percent of the cost.
