JONESBORO, AR (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team concluded competition at its host tournament, the A-State Invitational, Saturday at Allen Park in Jonesboro to bring an end to the fall season for the Red Wolves.
A-State claimed two titles in the tournament with Tamara Slijepcevic/Janie Nowland earning the flight one doubles championship by defeating Valeriia Kashina/Ekaterina Donetskova of Southeast Missouri 8-7 and Murray State's duo of Eleonore Tchakarova/Verginie Tchakarova 8-6. Arkansas State's Julie Gauguery recorded the flight three singles title by earning a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Megan Blue of Murray State.
"Tamara and Janie had another great doubles tournament by winning their second title of the fall," A-State women's tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. "I'm really proud of Julie for winning her first college tournament. She's improved tremendously over the past two months."
The Red Wolves claimed two runner-up finishes and three third-place honors in singles play. Slijepcevic was defeated by Murray State's Andrea Eskauriatza in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to finish as the runner-up in flight one, while Sofia Krsmanovic claimed a runner-up finish after falling to Bianca Strukelj of UCA 6-3, 6-4.
Biljana Miloshevska earned a third-place finish in flight two by defeating Kelsey Williams of UCA 2-6, 6-3, 10-5, while A-State's Jess Heeps-Eriksen recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over SEMO's Annisa Waransanti to finish third in flight four. Chiara Stefanov took home A-State's final third-place finish by defeating Belmont's Maddi Gilley in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Victoria Pisani won her only match of the day against Belmont's Jenna Krakau 6-2, 6-1, while Nowland recorded a consolation draw runner-up finish when she fell to Murray State's Carla Suga 7-5, 7-5.
The Red Wolves captured two doubles runner-up finishes on the day. Gauguery/Miloshevska finished as the runner-up in flight two after defeating UCA's duo of Simona Horsikyan/Cassidy Crawford 8-4 and falling to Murray State's pair of Eskauriatza/Erin Patton 8-3. In flight three, Heeps-Eriksen/Pisani registered an 8-0 win over Southern Illinois-Carbondale's pair of Polina Dozortseva/Lauren Hoekstra before falling to SEMO's duo of Heather Robinson/Valeriia Nagovitcina by a score of 8-6 to finish third. Krsmanovic/Stefanov lost to Murray State's pair of Suga/Blue 8-6 and fell to Belmont's Abbie Mather/Gilley 8-5 to finish fourth in flight four.
"Overall, we finished in the top of every flight for singles and doubles," Engelbrecht added. "We had a successful fall season and I'm proud of the team because they worked extremely hard this fall. I'm looking forward to taking some time to focus on improving our strength and conditioning and some time to work on technique. We can have a great spring season if we prepare well over the next two months."
The Red Wolves return to the courts for its spring season Jan. 18-20 at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla.
